Every painting begins with the same pursuit: light. Like the Impressionists who followed the changing colours of the sky from dawn to dusk, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono spends his days observing sunlight as it touches the sea, clouds, and landscapes of Indonesia, then preserving those moments on canvas. For SBY, however, light is more than a visual element. It is a metaphor for hope itself.
Behind every brushstroke lies a long journey of the heart. For more than five years, SBY lived through the darkest period of his life after the passing of his beloved wife, Ani Yudhoyono. It was there that he rediscovered painting not as an escape, but as a path back to hope. “Painting became my source of hope,” he said. Every completed canvas shows that even from the deepest sorrow, a person can still find light and move forward.
